Do you think language unites or divides us?

In my opinion, language divides us. In the United States many immigrants speak different languages.  The United States is not totally unified because most immigrants are not fully participating in the culture and society because language barrier. Immigrants are part of the American population, but language divides us   and  a lot of  immigrants can't communicate within the society around them. Because of Language barrier, people can not get better information. Language diversity create crime and racial conflict so I don't see where language unites us. The English language barrier cannot  assist individuals to succeed in having a social life in the United States. Immigrants who do not speak English, they don't have a better opportunity to find employment and to speak out about their rights. They are not comfortable to participate in community events and activities; also it is hard for them to know each other neighbors. In addition, language barriers can create confusion among residents. Many Spanish immigrants usually cannot speak English, and they have a rough time with their children and their neighbors. Immigrants who don’t speak English just close their doors, and they don’t have a connection with society. Yes, I do think language divides us and creates isolation.

  1. Genet, I appreciate your feelings. We are studying in a "Class of Immigration". That's why not only me can understand you well but also the rest can do it well too. Yes, You are right, the language is a big barrier for immigrants at the first period of integrating process. After this time, you become more confident in yourself and you can take part in community well.
